Ending Life Support for Infants

Texas is currently going through this decision yet again. The state has a law permitting hospitals to cut off futile medical treatment to certain patients. The idea behind the law is to prevent treatment that does not have a chance to succeed and which only serves to prolong suffering. The decision-making process takes the decision out of the parents’ hands in some cases, allowing hospitals to set a deadline for final termination of life support even in opposition to the parents’ wishes.
